Dogs may not be allowed in national parks, but there are plenty of coastal reserves, rail trails and state forests where dogs are welcome. Enjoy stunning coastal views or shady forest paths while getting some fresh air and exercise on these dog-friendly walks in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Queensland

Ivan Evans Walk, Cairns

Distance: 4.3km   Time: 1.5 hours

Follow this narrow dirt track as it gradually ascends through shady forest to BoiBoi viewpoint which overlooks Cairns and the Coral Sea. Cross bridges over streams, enjoy the sound of cascading waters and marvel at the root systems of mighty fig trees.

Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail, Fraser Coast

Distance: 14km   

Hugging the Fraser Coast waterfront from Urangan Pier to Point Vernon, Hervey Bay’s 14km-long esplanade is perfect for morning and evening strolls. Choose a different stretch to explore each day and keep your eyes peeled for whales (in season).

Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk, Sunshine Coast

Distance: 4km   Time: 1-1.5 hours

Dogs are welcome and allowed off-leash in some areas on this out-and-back trail through lush forest. Step back in time with information boards along the route that offer insights into the tramway’s history. Stop in Buderim afterwards to grab some refreshments.

New South Wales

Nambucca beaches, Mid North Coast

Distance: 4.2km   Time: 1.25 hours

Starting from the V-Wall directly outside the park, this trail takes you down the Graffiti Walk, across the headland, along Shelly Beach and back down Liston Street to the Inner Harbour. It’s a great way to experience the different aspects of Nambucca Heads.

Fishermans Bay to Boat Harbour Headland via Whale Lookout, Port Stephens

Distance: 12.2km   Time: 3.5 hours

There are multiple entry points to this out-and-back coastal trail on the south side of Port Stephens, so you can make it as long or as short as you please. Soak up the sea views from beaches, headlands and lookouts. Perhaps spy whales spurting on the horizon.

Punkally Creek via Wagonga Scenic Drive Bridge, South Coast

Distance: 11.4km.  Time: 3.25 hours

Within the Bodalla State Forest on the NSW South Coast, this loop trail is perfect for pets who love longer walks. Expect wide undulating paths and rocky creeks where your pup can enjoy a splash around, but they must remain on leash at all times.

Victoria

George Bass Coastal Walk, Gippsland

Distance: 15.1 km   Time: 4 hours

Just across the bridge from Phillip Island, explore the Punchbowl Coastal Reserve. Stretching from San Remo to Kilcunda, this out-and-back coastal trail hugs the coast offering amazing views as well as beach access points that provide a gateway to sand dunes and rock pools.

Cape Paterson Beach Walk, Gippsland

Distance: 5.3 km   Time: 1 hour

Enjoy the feel of sand between your toes and paws as you explore the Cape Paterson Coastal Reserve. This trail runs behind First Surf Beach and along Second Surf Beach and F Break Beach. Access for dogs is restricted at certain times of day so check signage before walking.
