For most people, their four legged friend is a much loved part of the family and with a little pre-planning, your pet can enjoy a holiday away as much as the human members of the family. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when travelling with pets.

Choosing a place to stay

Ingenia Holidays have pet friendly parks in a range of great holiday locations, where pets are welcome on caravan and camping sites. It is best to check the availability of pet friendly sites with the park prior to booking and any other conditions or restrictions that apply.

Update microchip details

In case your pooch decides to do some ‘adventuring’ of his own while you’re on holidays, it is important to ensure your pet is microchipped and the details are up to date. It is also a good idea to attach an ID tag with your contact details to your pet’s collar.

Puppy packing

The key to a stress free holiday with your pet is planning ahead. Things to pack include food and water bowls, along with your pet’s usual food and treats. Bedding and toys will help your pet feel at home and some extra towels are a good idea especially if planning a beach holiday. Pack enough medications, flea and worming treatments and waste bags to cover the whole holiday.

Road tripping

If you’re planning on taking a road trip with your dog, remember to take regular breaks for your pet to go to the toilet and have a run around. A vehicle restraint or crate will keep your pet secure and reduce driver distraction. Dogs can also experience motion sickness, so it is best not to feed a large meal right before jumping in the car.

Exploring a new place

Visiting somewhere new for the first time can be exciting and unnerving for pets, so it is important to keep your pooch securely on a lead. When you arrive at your holiday destination it is a good idea to take you dog for a walk to burn off some of the energy from the car ride and to take in all the new sights, smells and sounds.

All it takes is a little planning to ensure you have a fun, safe and memorable trip away with your pet.
