Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island is just a 45 minute ferry ride from Cairns and combines the best of North Queensland, from sandy beaches to stunning reef views and lush vegetation. Visitors can purchase a Self-Guided Historical Hike booklet that will offer interesting facts about the island, historical points of interest and anecdotes to bring your hike to life. Take on the summit track for breathtaking views of Welcome Bay and the rainforest, and stop at lighthouses and sites that hark back to the World War II military occupation. The Secret Garden and Nudey Beach walks offer less challenging options with equally as beautiful scenery.

Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail
Enjoy a waterfront stroll along the Hervey Bay Esplanade, stretching over 14km from Urangan Harbour to Gatakers Bay. Drop into the Hervey Bay Information Centre for a map and then enjoy meandering along the esplanade. Take in spectacular views from Point Vernon, Gables Point or Mathew Flinders Lookout, spend some time relaxing in the parks along the way or stop at the popular Scarness Beach for a swim. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the Esplanade to grab a coffee or meal to refuel.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk winds through some of the region’s most stunning natural landscapes from subtropical rainforest to open eucalypt forest. Cool off by pristine rock pools, marvel at the cascading Kondalilla Falls and listen for the melodic chatter of over 100 species of birds who inhabit the area. The full 58km will take about four days to complete however there are shorter full day and half day walks that allow you to take in the scenery and abundant wildlife at a more leisurely pace.

Arakoon National Park
Overlooking peaceful Trial Bay and surrounded by sandy beaches and rocky foreshores, Arakoon National Park offers a range of walking tracks and is also home to the fascinating Trial Bay Goal, dating back to the 19th century. The Monument Hill walking track winds through natural vegetation dotted with flannel flowers planted by German internees during World War I, before finally leading to sea views from the summit. The Trial Bay Goal is a fascinating piece of history and the museum and memorial offer visitors a look into the past of the site from 19th century goal to wartime internment camp. The Powder Magazine track is a picturesque walk through casuarina and banksias and meets up with the Bridle Trail, where horses once hauled the steam crane used in the granite quarry. For those looking for a challenge, the Little Bay to Smoky Cape walk offers 10km of stunning coastal views.
