New South Wales’ South Coast and hinterland are home to countless stunning walks that showcase Australia’s beautiful coastal scenery and world-class national parks.

Thanks to sunny days and cooler temperatures, winter is the ideal time to explore these abundant South Coast walks, which provide the perfect excuse (if you really need one) to plan your next holiday or weekend getaway. From easy strolls to challenging hikes, here are some of our favourites.

Pebbly Beach to Snake Bay

(5.6km return  / 1-2 hours)

If you enjoy stunning coastal walks and like getting a little off the beaten track, why not try the Pebbly Beach to Snake Bay walking track? The trail winds its way across remote beaches and through lush rainforest gullies. It’s a great way to discover some of the beautifully unspoilt coastline and dramatic cave and rock formations of Murramarang National Park. Be sure to keep your eyes open for whales on the horizon.

Durras Mountain

(6.6-10km return / 3-5 hours)

For a more challenging walk, trek Durras Mountain (also in Murramarang National Park), which can be accessed from either Pebbly Beach (6.6km return) or Pretty Beach (10km return). Both paths climb steadily through coastal rainforest to the top of Durras Mountain. If the steep climb to the top doesn’t take your breath away, we reckon the views from the top will. Allow 3-5 hours for either path, or 4-5 hours if you plan to do the full 12-kilometre loop.

The Big Hole

(3.5km return / 1.5 hours) & (12km return/5 hours)

If you want to head inland, try Deua National Park, where you’ll find The Big Hole. This adventurous walk takes you through dry eucalypt forest to the viewing platform. First discovered in 1862, The Big Hole is a 100-metre deep and 50-metre wide chasm and thought to be around 400 million years old. Be warned, you will get your feet wet crossing the Shoalhaven River to get there! Those looking for a longer hike can continue on to Marble Arch.

Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden

(500m-2km / 20 mins – 2 hours)

If you prefer your walks a little less wild, why not visit Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden. Your green thumbs will be twitching like crazy as you stroll along the many trails. Walks range from 500 metres to two kilometres and include two wheelchair accessible tracks and a special children’s walk. From there, explore the sensory garden before enjoying a refreshment at the Gardens Café.

Stay at Ingenia Holidays Moruya and Ingenia Holidays Tomakin, which are both located close to each of these walking tracks.
