It may sound obvious, but there’s nothing that surpasses the quintessential pride you feel on Australia Day. The smell of the BBQ charring away with lamb, the crunch of Pavlova covered in strawberries and bounds of green and gold decorations.

For many Aussies, it’s the perfect time of year to get the family together, relax with friends, and enjoy a long weekend away during the middle of summer. Here are some tips on how you can add the celebration your Australia Day at Ingenia Holiday parks!

Essential summer playlist

Nothing sets the scene at your backyard BBQ than some classic Aussie hits. We’re talking Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Crowded House (we know they’re Kiwi’s but we’ll claim them anyway), Paul Kelly, Archie Roach, Powderfinger, Gang of Youths. Who’s on your greatest Aussie hits playlist?

Lamb on the BBQ

As ‘Lambassador’ Sam Kekovich reminds us every year, it’s un-Australian to not eat lamb on Australia Day. You know it makes sense. So, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re charring off chops or sizzling some snags, lamb is the perfect way to fill those rumbling tummies. Top it off with a simple salad or veggies, even a true-blue damper, and you’ll still have room for dessert (or perhaps a few more frothies).

Cold beers in the esky (Aussies like beer)

It’s one of the many stereotypes of our fine nation that we seem to live up to. But what else is in your Esky? Soft drinks, juice, bottles of water and maybe even some premixed goodies. One thing for sure is that it’s going to be HOT on Australia Day (it always is), so make sure to cool down responsibly and balance your tinnies with equal parts H2o!

Pool party with family and friends

Australia Day is always a scorcher! So why not relax poolside with your friends and family and host a pool party?! At some of our parks this season, we’ll even have super cool inflatable water parks available! You can relax and soak up the summer vibe poolside at Ingenia Holidays; we’ll have pool toys, drinks, nibbles, and our essential summer playlist ready to go on Australia day. Don’t forget to pack your essentials for the pool too:

  • Swimmers
  • Towel
  • Goggles
  • Sunscreen
  • Pool toys

It isn’t a pool party without having all the right toys to really make the day. We’re talking inflatable flamingos, floaty rings, water pistols, and all your favourite inflatable toys. Want to stay dry? We’ll have loads of fun activities available on the grass too, including cricket, thong throwing competitions, biting an Arnott’s Biccie into the shape of Australia (more challenging than you would think) and many more games to entertain the whole family. Check our parks Facebook pages to see their scheduled activities.

Backyard cricket

Round up your teams and have your own backyard Ashes. If you don’t have a cricket set, no worries, there’s nothing more Aussie than improvising. Just grab an esky for the wickets are you’re ready to start batting.

The perfect summer pavlova

It doesn’t matter whether you believe the humble pavlova is an Australian or New Zealand creation, there is no denying that they are the perfect summertime dessert. What’s even better is that you can enjoy your pavlova from the comfort of your cabin or caravan too. Major supermarkets sell a simple meringue base, so all you need to do is add the cream and fruit. Oh, so yummy and customisable, you can’t go wrong with this fabulous treat; cover in strawberries, mango, passionfruit, chocolate, you name it! Go on, indulge yourself.

Stargazing at the end of the day

After a long hard day of BBQ’s, cricket and pavlova, it’s time to kick back and relax under the stars; enjoy the southern sky in all its glory. Can you spot the Southern Cross, Saucepan, or the Emu in the sky? See how many you can find among your group. Looking for somewhere special to spend your Australia Day long weekend? Say G’Day this Australia Day, we’d love to see you visit our parks. Check out Ingenia Holidays, many great locations for a range of cabin, camping, glamping and caravaning!
