There’s nothing quite like a trip to the beach, feeling the sand beneath your feet and splashing in the waves. So why should your four legged friend miss out on all the fun?

Enjoy a holiday away with your pooch and check out some of these ‘paw-some’ dog beaches for a memorable day out.

North Broulee Beach

Enjoy a stroll along the waterfront or let your dog get its paws wet in the ocean at North Broulee Beach. The 800m off leash area stretches from Smith Street south to the National Park boundary and is a great place for you dog to have a run in the sand and work off some energy. Head to the beach in the morning to watch surfers out catching waves and enjoy the picturesque spot before the afternoon breezes pick up.

Lakes Beach Budgewoi

Have a fun day out with your dog at Lakes Beach Budgewoi, a short drive from Lake Macquarie on the New South Wales Central Coast. The off leash area is 500m north of the surf club and is a picture perfect spot to take you dog for a wade in the ocean and a walk along the white sandy beaches.

Haywards Beach

The Sapphire Coast is a great place to holiday with your pup, with a choice of dog beaches, walks and pet friendly cafes. Haywards Beach, near the seaside town of Bermagui, is a beautiful beach with views of the striking formations of Camel Rock. Take your dog for a play on the beach or just laze on the sand together while you take in the scenery from the off leash area which runs for a kilometre from south of the Camel Rock entrance to near the Wallaga Lake Road and Old Tilba Road intersection.

Back Beach

Head to Back Beach at South West Rocks where your dog can enjoy running on the sand to their hearts content. The pretty beach is backed by low, wide vegetated dunes and mangroves and while the surf at Back Beach is more prone to rips and bigger swells than some of the other nearby beaches, it is still a lovely spot to wade in the shallows and give your dog a chance to get their paws wet.

Swimming Creek Beach

Enjoy the laid back and friendly atmosphere of Nambucca Heads during a visit to Swimming Creek Beach with your furry pal. Dogs are welcome off leash from the Swimming Creek Beach access north to the walk bridge access to the beach. The long stretch of soft sand makes a wonderful place to take a walk and smaller dogs (or those who aren’t fans of big waves) will love having a paddle in the shallow patches of water.

Rowland Reserve

If your pooch likes to socialise with other dogs then a visit to Rowland Reserve at Bayview in Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a great day out. The popular spot can get busy on weekends but there is plenty of water, sand and grassy areas for your dog to sniff and run around and you can enjoy having a chat with other like-minded pet owners while your furry friends have a play.

Tips & Doggie Beach Etiquette

  • Make sure your dog is supervised and under your control at all times and is trained to come when it’s called
  • Carry tidy bags to remove all pet waste and dispose in an appropriate bin
  • Keep your dog on a lead when walking to and from the off leash area
  • Ensure your dog is microchipped and wearing a collar with ID attached
  • Respect other beach users at all times
  • It is easy for dogs (and people) to get dehydrated when at the beach so it’s a good idea to bring along a water bottle and travel bowl
  • If you are driving to the beach some old towels will keep wet and sandy fur off the seats on the way home
