Head west out of Melbourne and you’ll find Torquay, gateway to the Great Ocean Road and an ideal base for exploring Victoria’s west coast. A surfing mecca, it draws visitors from around the globe and is often dubbed the spiritual home of Australian surfing. Bells Beach is a popular spot for surfers to hang ten or even just hang out. The surf museum is worth a visit too, it’s packed with exhibits and surfing memorabilia. Day trip along the Great Ocean Road serve up lighthouses, lookouts and so much more, and driving westward, you’re on the right side of the road to pull over and take in the view as often as you please.

Eastern delights

Phillip Island

Head East out of Melbourne and you’ll find yourself on the Bass Coast. First stop, Phillip Island. Don’t be fooled by its compact size, there are plenty of attractions pack into its 100 square kilometres. One must-do is the Antarctic Journey. Feel for chill of sub-zero temperatures and discover fun facts with interactive exhibits, then head to the nearby Penguin Parade to watch tiny penguins as they waddle up the beach to their burrows each night. And be sure to stop in at the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory. It’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

Cape Paterson

Once you’ve spent a day, or three, exploring Phillip Island, it’s time to move further along the coast to Cape Paterson. With marine park offshore and a coast reserve on the water’s edge, it’s great for lazy days spent fishing, playing on the beach or enjoying relaxing coastal drives, the perfect antidote to busy city life. If you’re keen to sample some of the local wines, you’ll find seven wineries and cellar doors within a 1.5-hour drive. After a few days of restful relaxation, pile everyone into the car and head back home fully refreshed.
